Strengthening Marine Turtle Management and Conservation across Cape York

2015-Flatback-Turtle

The Cape York Marine Turtle Nest Monitoring Programme aims for sustainable and resilient populations of marine turtles in Cape York through protecting and improving breeding success, reducing feral pig predation and an ongoing involvement of local Indigenous communities in marine conservation. Following our evaluation of the governance, management and delivery of the programme on behalf of Cape York NRM, TierraMar lead a large workshop with government, industry, traditional owners and rangers, research, private sector and community stakeholders to identify short and medium term investment priorities, strategies and activities for improving marine turtle conservation and management across Cape York in Queensland, Australia. This has resulted in new and improved approaches to program management being adopted, including the formation of the Western Cape Turtle Threat Abatement Alliance (WCTTAA) which is an agreement between land and sea managers from Pormpuraaw, Napranum, Mapoon, Northern Peninsula Area and Kowanyama to work together for the protection of marine turtles along the west coast of Cape York.
