Ocean Youth Aotearoa January 2026

Last month, we saw a new group of young ocean leaders take part in our summer Ocean Youth Aotearoa program – eight days of learning, exploration, and thoughtful discussion in Auckland, hosted at Kelly Tarlton’s SEA LIFE.

Throughout the program, students explored pathways in marine science and conservation, reflecting on how individuals and communities can protect and respect coastal environments. They examined how marine museum collections help scientists track environmental change over time, and saw first-hand how marine reserves, scientific research, and mātauranga Māori work together to care for our oceans.

Participants heard from Revive Our Gulf about their partnership with iwi, hapū, whānau and communities to restore mussel beds in the Hauraki Gulf. They discussed what sustainable fisheries look like in practice, explored how veterinary care and research support marine wildlife, and considered how public engagement strengthens conservation outcomes.

The program concluded with students planning and presenting projects designed to make a difference in their own communities – bringing together knowledge, systems thinking, and creativity. Along the way, there were plenty of memorable experiences and moments of connection.

We are incredibly proud of these young leaders. Their curiosity, courage, and willingness to ask questions, and to stand up for what matters, is inspiring.

Thank you to Alanta, Hannah and Victoria for delivering the program, and to Chantelle, our Education Lead, and Dr Hayley for their design and guidance.

Our next Ocean Youth Aotearoa program will take place in October.
