A circular program for end-of-life fishing gear in the commercial sector by 2030

We’re currently helping establish a national  End-of-Life (EOL) fishing gear recovery and recycling program for Australia's commercial fishing and aquaculture sectors to demonstrate the strong commitment to circularity within the industry.
While Australia’s fishing industry does not make a significant contribution to the ghost gear problem due to the high level of regulation, this initiative will reduce landfill and enhance the industry’s stewardship by supporting recycling efforts.
This program, being developed with the support of the Fisheries Research and Development Corporation and our partners, aligns Australia with requests we are making of other nations while showcasing leadership in sustainability and circularity.
It will also foster the development of recycling technologies and capacity, providing valuable solutions for other countries establishing similar systems. Currently in its early stages, with a feasibility assessment due mid-2025, the program will collect and recycle EOL gear, transforming it into new products, reducing disposal costs for the industry, and financially supporting marine conservation.
By developing a scalable model, this initiative will not only strengthen Australia’s efforts but also incentivise uptake and provide security and connection between buyers and sellers for the developing recycling industry of Australia. It is the intention of the program that the technological solutions and capacity-building opportunities developed through it can be shared with other nations looking to implement effective gear recycling systems. It will also position the Australian industry well as the Global Plastic Treaty negotiations are finalised over the next few months.
